In 1996, noticing a number of poachers, I decided that I would need something to protect my strawberries. I decided on, in keeping with the theme of edible flora, a raspberry hedge, and started it with one raspberry plant.
In the summer of 1966, I attempted to plant some of the shoots that came from my one plant - with disastrous results. In the spring of 97, when the plants were a few inches long, I transplanted about 14. 14 survived. Later on in the year, I had 55 shoots, which ,transplanted, translated into 3 more plants.
The moral to this story is: one should only transplant raspberry plants in the springtime, when they've had the fall and at least part of the spring to develope a root system.
